Our advocacy team promotes environmentally friendly biking in partnership with local bike shops, and includes support from the City of Boulder, CU Environmental Center, Boulder Police and CU Police.

3 Steps to Bike BOLDER

Invest in Diamond rated locks.

Staying safe includes securing your bike so you aren't left walking. Check out our Knowledge for bike lock recommendations and ratings.

Secure your bike.

As pictured, be sure to loop your lock around the rear wheel inside the bike triangle, secured to the rack. Ideally you should use a second lock to loop through the other wheel, or secure that wheel with locking skewers.
Note: Given the variability of bike shapes and sizes, no single lock fits all; choose your lock carefully.

Register your bike on Bike Index.

BikeIndex.org is the nationally recognized service that lets you register your bikes, e-bikes and scooters for free!
The registry establishes ownership and provides an easy way to list both Stolen and Found bikes. Bike Index's searchable database supports bike recovery for everyone.

Standard for Bike Lock ratings: Sold Secure The Sold Secure lock rating system is used by consumers, law enforcement, and insurance companies; Diamond is the highest rating.

In 2025 over 500 bikes were reported stolen to Boulder Police (with more reported to Bike Index & CU Police). In the past 2 years we also saw a rise in the number of e-bikes stolen, and an increasing number of high security chains and U-locks were defeated. Boulder Police-Bike Thefts
The Colorado Felony Theft level is $2,000. Any thief caught stealing a bike valued at less than $2K will likely be charged with a misdemeanor; bike thieves are rarely arrested given our crowded jails. See: 2022 Mexico Theft Connection
